THE LEAKPROOF WASHER

The Flexing action of the lips under pressure provides a positive and leak proof seal against, water, gases, oil and a wide range of other fluids and depending upon size up to pressures in excess of 10,000 lbf/in2 (690 bar). Comprising of synthetic rubber sealing member bonded to a plated metallic washer, the rubber bonded washer also called ‘Dowty Seals’ in addition to eliminating leakage, reduces tooling, installation and maintenance costs. The face-to-face sealing dispenses with groove cutting or special machining and reduces bolting torque. Washers to suit various bolt sizes are available (see list for more details). There are two types of basic designs available: -

• Regular bonded Seal
• Self Centering bonded Seal

MATERIAL

Various types of rubber materials are available to suit temperature & type of fluid sealed. There are different categories for automotive and aerospace applications. Main elastomers used are NBR, HNBR, Flouroelastomer etc. (see elastomer selection chart for more details). Metal washer materials are generally coated mild or high strength steel or stainless steel.
